RECORDED PRESENTATION

MIT and Belimo Research on the Energy Valve Confirms Improved Chilled Water Delta T Performance.



Proceeding from International District Energy Association (IDEA) Annual Campus Energy Conference.

MIT and Belimo conducted experiments in 2011 on six air handling units at MIT’s Hayden Library to determine relative effectiveness of several strategies to improve chilled water delta T performance. Using original control valve versus Belimo Energy Valve with smart actuator, and controlling air temperature versus chilled water delta T; delta T was measured for various combinations of control strategies. Results presented in this joint MIT and Belimo presentation (and paper).

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

The Belimo Energy Valve Cures Medical University’s Low Delta-T

To prove that the Energy Valve could do what it was designed to do, Scott Czubkowski, PE, Director of Engineering at Kerney Associates, installed the valve at the university’s Clinical Research Building. The building houses over 300,000 sq ft of research space, including research in pediatrics and pharmacology. It is also one of the newest buildings on campus, opening in late 2004. Even with the building less than eight years old, it was still lacking in efficiency. On average, the building was seeing a 7°F Delta-T and inefficient energy transfer. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT)

MIT Tests New Energy Valve Technology at Charles Hayden Library and Reaps the Rewards of Higher Delta-T!

Engineers at MIT were well aware that low delta-T syndrome problems were a significant energy cost to the campus. Before the retrofit, the total average delta-t for the coils at the Hayden Library was 6.15°F, based on metering data taken from the period of August 9, 2010 thru October 9, 2010. After the retrofit, the building was metered for the exact same calendar period (August 9, 2010 - October 9) in 2011. The average delta-T had risen from 6.15°F to 12.14°F, reducing chilled water flow to the building by 49%. This percentage is weather normalized, meaning that it has been adjusted for variances in outdoor temperature that occurred during the metered period. Thus, the 49% is an exact and accurate representation of the overall flow reduction. Read on to comprehend the whole story.

Belimo Energy Valve Proves Air Coils are Batting a Thousand

According to this sports entertainment complex, its 18 building main campus is the company’s “mother ship,” employing close to 4,000 people. It’s the job of these employees to keep this 24/7 sports channel running. The buildings on campus are also an important factor. They need the most efficient and reliable mechanical systems in order for the show to go on. That is why Belimo chose this facility to install its Energy Valves.

The goal of the project was to employ the Energy Valves so that the facility engineers can collect data from the valve and show for a fact that delta T readings are where they should be, coils are sized correctly, working properly, and working efficiently.

Improving Campus Chilled Water Systems with Intelligent Control Valves: A Field Study

This white paper details a field study conducted on two university campuses in Massachusetts and Colorado during the cooling season of 2011; an experimental study that was to alleviate ΔΤ degradation problems on both campuses through the use of intelligent pressure independent control valves, and to quantify the improvements achieved. The Massachusetts field results revealed that the intelligent control valves, when coupled with a ΔΤ management strategy, have allowed the campus to serve additional cooling load on its campus with the same distribution and central plant system.
